Not just any ERA in music...

This is ALT BLK ERA

Young Nottingham Sisters, Nyrobi & Chaya, are creating their own world of alternative sound and vision which, in turn, helps to light up many or our music loving lives. Over the last year, especially, it’s been awesome to see their organic rise in profile.

Absolute Rock Star vibrations are pulsing from ALT BLK ERA. Believe in the new rock and roll. Despite the backdrop of modern life “reality”, anything can still happen!

TheZineUK wondered what gives ALT BLK ERA, themselves, positive hope?

“The world feels like it's on fire right now! Since the pandemic it seems like there has been non-stop stress, worry and conflict. Most of it seems to be fueled by insatiable greed and corruption by people who already have so much. Sometimes you feel powerless but watching young people resist the powers around the world, no matter how small of an act, gives us hope. We use our voices through our songs too - but music has also been our escape from the dystopian.

We’re both very optimistic about what we can achieve and believe we can do anything we set our minds to. Our goals can seem unrealistic to others but we don’t set limits on ourselves and we are working hard to make whatever we dream of, a reality”.

Z : Where did you first start to learn music and who were your early influences?

“We started to learn music at the ages of ten & seven at the Community Recording Studio, a non-profit organisation in our city of Nottingham! We got the opportunity to experiment with so many different instruments like guitar, drums and the piano where we were allowed to express ourselves and learn the music that we wanted to play.

Our sound is nothing like the music we grew up on. We had no idea about Rock and Metal music so the scene and we came into it from a love of the sound of the guitar. I guess our early influences were artists like Rihanna, Leona Lewis, Etana and whoever else was on the radio at that time but also it was reggae and neo-soul because this is the music that our mum filled the airwaves with at home.”

Z : That’s some musical journey you’re on. What's All Happening In Your World, next?

“There are so many exciting things happening at the moment! The main one being the upcoming release of our debut album!

We’ve worked really, really hard to make sure it’s as perfect and authentically us as possible and the album has a story that will be revealed as we put out the singles.

We’re gearing up to release the first single from the album called ‘My Drummer's Girlfriend’ which is a grungy Indie-Rock song!

Yes it’s a little different from the sounds we've been putting out but as always - we make the music we love and we connect with people who love it, too.”

Z: Positivity for 2024. We need it.

On that wave, ALT BLK ERA have just been announced to support Tom Morello at Camden’s Electric Ballroom on 13th June! As they tweeted, “Tom is one of the icons who threw out 'The Musician's Rule Book' so we're soooo freakin' excited about this one!”. We’re excited for them, too.

Having found themselves on the red carpet of the MOBOs earlier this year, deservedly, ALT BLK ERA have been nominated for 'Best UK Breakthrough Artist' at the 2024 Heavy Music Awards for this Autumn. To vote - and to pre save the forthcoming single, ‘My Drummer’s Girlfriend’ - click here: …
